September 2007 - The birthday blast

We decided to combine Isaac and Cate's birthday celebrations with a canoing excursion to Tibblefork Reservior and then dinner, cake, and presents at my house. We invited the grandparents and cousins to join. It was quite a spectacle to see my not-so-outdoorsy extended family trying to navigate that canoe! There were several onlookers that were very entertained, I'm sure. The most memorable moments were these: me catching Amy's arm just seconds before she fell face first in the mud as she pushed the canoe out to sea, listening to my life-jacketed mom cry out "I want to go back!" as I tried to tell her "just act confident - we look like the biggest fools on the lake!" (all within earshot of several fisherman), and witnessing Nick try to steer the canoe holding the paddle with his hands reversed (try to picture this - holding the paddle with your left hand above your right instead of the other way around. Now try to make a paddling motion - feels a little strange?). Oh and I forgot to mention when my dad fell flat on his back in the muddy, water-logged canoe with Jack on top of him. All we saw were two legs sticking straight up in the air. We haven't laughed so hard in quite some time. And the poor Pelican 15.5 - hopefully it will see better days.

But we found a snake and that was cool! The kids were so brave!

The birthday pair wishing some wishes...

They had to try on their new presents - a sparkly twirling dancing dress and a knight.

Oh and did I mention the dinner? Roasted pork loin with garlic and rosemary, baked apples, steamed summer squash with parmesean cheese, and yummy breads. Ahhh - autumn. All in all - a nice occasion.

Oh, I wish I had been there for the canoe comedy. Love the dancing dress!
