Family Home Evening Flu Shots

This evening we had our 3rd annual Family Home Evening Flu Shots. This year, Dr. Wes' nurse sent home a kit with everything we would need - including Spiderman and My Little Pony bandaids and some yummy treats for after.
After a brief simplified overview of the immune system and why we receive vaccines in the first place, we found some really cool youtube videos of antibodies marking pathogens for destruction by the white blood cells. The kids were about as fascinated as we were - I guess science is in their genes!
There were a few tears shed but mostly the kids were very brave. Daddy gave the shot to Mommy and Mommy gave the shots to everyone else. Isaac even got to inject the vaccine into Daddy's arm! This activity might sounds a little strange but what do you expect with a doctor and a nurse for parents?

I think that is the coolest activity I have ever heard of. And I cannot believe how buff Addie is!

hmmm, remind me not to come to fhe at your house in October! Cute idea though and very responsible.

I WISH we could have this FHE without a trip to our Pediatrician! (no offense, Wes -- it's just so much easier to have the shots make house calls.) My Dad used to bring home our flu shots and boosters -- his nurse was never so sweet, but I am sure if she had thought of it, she would have been. (She's not a pedi nurse, after all!!)

Great idea, and very convenient. We need to make friends with a peds doc here. However, I think that our kids would revolt and never show up for FHE again if we suggested that. Tell your kids I am impressed and that they are very brave.

Hi Emily. I found your blog off of facebook. I've got to say that I don't think my kids would go for FHE flu shots but I think I'll follow your example and look online for info about antibodies etc. and show my kids. That may make them more willing to get their shot this year.
