Bear Lake Weekend - Part 3

Saturday afternoon we drove to Wellsville, Utah for a family reunion. It was held in an open grassy area that had two old-fashioned water slides. The kids had a blast!

The family reunion was for the descendents of Eldine and her 5 sisters. There are only 3 still living.
Jan won this picture of her grand-parents at the raffle.
The kids won this checkers game.
Eliott was there with his darling family.

A fun ending to a great weekend.

Bear Lake Weekend - Part 2

The second day of our quick trip was Saturday and we thought if the beach was that crowded on Friday - we couldn't even imagine what it was like on Saturday! So we decided to drive North to Paris, Idaho - population 600 (that's 450 more than the city where we stayed - St. Charles!).

We had plans of birdwatching at the Bear Lake nature preserve. On the way we ran across an old-fashioned playground. Not that old-fashioned I guess but we explained to the kids that these were the playgrounds of our childhood. Merry-go-rounds, metal slides and great big huge swings.

After we played around for a while we headed into the preserve. Yes - we love birdwatching and you can read more about it HERE.
It was a goldmine for bird sightings. We were pretty excited! But the horseflies were so thick we stayed in our car the whole time. It was easier to keep track of SJ that way anyway.

Two Ospreys sitting on top of telephone poles
A Great Horned Owl!!! Ok so we didn't see this while we were birdwatching - we saw it the night before. But still a great find!
Pelicans
A large group of Harrier hawks. We could have taken some great pictures except we were too excited with our new binoculars we completely forgot.
A ruddy duck. This was really exciting!! See the blue bill?
We also saw Sandhill Cranes, adult and juvenile Clark's Grebes, adult and juvenile Coots, White-faced Ibis, Drakes, Snowy Egrets, Black-crowned Night Herons, Black-necked Stilts and a ton of Canada Geese. We added several species to our family check-list! I know we're pretty nerdy.

After the bird-watching we ate at the Paris Cafe and strolled around main street and wandered through an antique store. It was great fun.

Bear Lake Weekend - Part One

The Bear Lake Country Cabins

We just got back from a quick get-away up to Bear Lake. We haven't been there since we were kids but with a family reunion in the general vicinity - we decided to make a trip of it.

My good friend Micki had recommended we for sure get a raspberry shake at Le Beau's drive-in and see a show at the Pickleville Playhouse. The raspberry shake(s) may have been worth the drive alone!! But probably the biggest highlight of our trip was the Western cookout and seeing "Bandito Rides Again" at the Pickleville Playhouse. This show was an absolute riot!! The humor is very similar to Nacho Libre and so my kids just ate it up! And the talent was very impressive for a community theater. Part of the appeal for me is the story of the theater itself - family-owned and operated for three generations. We loved it.

We spent the next day chillaxin' at the beach.
Along with everyone else in Bear Lake County. But we still had a blast!

We rented a waverunner.

Played in the sand.

Wes spent some time flying his "Skynosaur" - a trick kite he has owned for more than 20 years.

SJ wouldn't part with her backpack for most of the trip.

The kiddos

All in all - a great day at the beach!

Published

I finally did something that I have wanted to do for a long time! Make a blog book. Following my cousin Diana's recommendation, I used http://www.blog2print.com/.
It was fast and easy. I opted against spending my time to customize and edit the book so I can't vouch for their design options. I didn't remove any posts - like videos or slideshows. I just used their default layout and published two books in just a few minutes - with pretty boring covers I might add. But my main goal was just to get a hard copy of my blog.
The books arrived in the mail yesterday and although they are not perfect according to flow and layout - I could not be more thrilled!! Just to have them done.

My mom borrowed the first book which is Oct-Dec 2007. This is the second book - the entire year of 2008.

Check that off the list!
